The History of Paddington Street Gardens
The gardens have a fascinating history dating back to the 18th century, when the land was used as a burial ground serving the local parish. The southern section was consecrated in 1733, with additional burial space established north of Paddington Street several decades later.
Following the closure of the burial ground in the early 19th century, the site was transformed into a public garden, officially opening in 1886. Today, historic memorials and surviving architectural features offer a glimpse into the area’s past.
The gardens are also associated with landscape gardener Fanny Wilkinson, who played an important role in transforming former burial grounds into welcoming public spaces across London.
