Talk: Greek Women Artists from Antiquity to the Present – The Hellenic Centre
Tracing the lives and work of three pioneering Greek women painters, Proofs of the Impossible explores the social, political and cultural barriers faced by women seeking to build artistic careers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Led by art historian Gelly Gryntaki, the lecture focuses on Eleni Altamoura, Sofia Laskaridou and Thalia Flora-Karavia, examining how each artist navigated a world in which opportunities for women in the arts remained sharply limited. Their stories offer a wider perspective on women’s changing roles in Greek society and the conditions that shaped their creative lives.
The second instalment in The Origin of Painting: Greek Women Artists from Antiquity to the Present, the event forms part of a wider series tracing nearly three millennia of women’s contributions to Greek visual culture. Beginning in antiquity and continuing into contemporary art, the series aims to bring greater visibility to artists whose work has often been overlooked within traditional art history.
Taking place on Thursday 17 December at 7pm, the richly illustrated lecture combines artworks, biography and historical context, with attendees also receiving a curated bibliography and recommendations for further reading and viewing.
