Marina Sakali: In Conversation – The Hellenic Centre
Tracing the emergence of the Ottoman Greek press through a period of profound political and social change, The Uses of Oppression explores the everyday experiences of Ottoman Greeks between 1830 and 1862 through the newspapers they read, wrote and contributed to.
Author Marina Sakali, Lady Marks, will discuss her book with historian Dr Şükrü Ilıcak, drawing on the voices of editors, correspondents, advertisers, commentators and readers to reveal how the press reflected the ambitions, anxieties and changing identities of a generation.
Emerging during the decades of reform known as the Tanzimat, the Ottoman Greek press was both shaped by and actively involved in the transformations taking place around it. Through its pages, Sakali examines reactions to political events, changing social aspirations, encounters with Western-style norms and the broader questions facing Greek communities within the Ottoman Empire.
Taking place on Thursday 3 December at 7pm, the conversation offers a closer look at how newspapers can illuminate the social and political life of the nineteenth century, revealing the press not simply as a record of change, but as one of the forces helping to shape it. The event is presented in collaboration with the Anglo-Turkish Society.
