Greek Tragedy Upside Down – The Hellenic Centre
Moving from the Baroque to the twentieth century, pianist and composer Costas Fotopoulos presents an Reconsidering two of Greek tragedy’s most enduring female figures, Greek Tragedy Upside Down explores Electra and Medea through contemporary queer and feminist perspectives, asking how new readings can challenge the hierarchies embedded within the classical canon.
Led by award-winning director, choreographer and performer Mayra Stergiou and artist, writer and researcher Nazli Tabatabai-Khatambakhsh, the discussion will examine how gender, power, time and authorship can be disrupted and reimagined when ancient tragedy is approached through different critical lenses.
Drawing on both speakers’ interdisciplinary practices across theatre, performance, writing and research, the event considers the continuing relevance of myth and the possibilities that emerge when familiar stories are revisited from perspectives historically pushed to the margins.
Taking place on Saturday 28 November at 3pm, the talk offers an opportunity to encounter Electra and Medea beyond traditional interpretations, opening up wider questions around who gets to tell these stories, how they are inherited and how the classical canon might be reshaped for contemporary audiences.
