Freed From Desire – The Bomb Factory Art Foundation

Explore Freed From Desire, The Bomb Factory Art Foundation’s annual October group exhibition, opening at its Marylebone Gallery on 8 October.

Bringing together painting, sculpture, installation, performance and music, the exhibition looks at how shared spaces can become places of resistance, freedom and connection. Drawing on the legacy of the Acid House movement, it reflects on how warehouses, disused buildings and other overlooked spaces became important gathering places during the late 1980s.

At the heart of the exhibition is the idea of the “third place” — spaces beyond home and work where communities can meet and form connections. As these places become increasingly scarce across London, Freed From Desire asks what is lost when they disappear and how new spaces for collective experience can be created.

Works throughout the exhibition explore these themes in different ways, from Andrew Hart’s chill-out room inspired by British club culture to Hannah Rose Stewart’s maquette of a former Newcastle pub and Henry Coleman’s repurposed 1980s leisure centre lamps.

Opening on 8 October, Freed From Desire offers a thought-provoking look at gathering, identity and the creative possibilities that emerge when people come together.
