Currency Exchange – The Gallery of Everything

From 4th June to 5th July 2026, The Gallery of Everything presents CURRENCY EXCHANGE, a group exhibition exploring physical money through fictional financial instruments, private economies and imaginary medallions.

Bringing together four artists working outside traditional art-historical narratives, the exhibition considers how individuals create their own systems of value beyond the recognised structures of banks, governments and markets.

At its centre is Emile Josome Hodinos, the adopted name of French artist and engraver Joseph Ernest Ménétrier. Working from the Ville-Évrard hospital, Hodinos produced an extensive collection of imagined medals, coins and currencies on scraps of found paper and food wrappers. Filled with allegorical figures, decorative borders, civic mottos and scenes inspired by Greek and Roman history, these intricate drawings transformed everyday materials into the foundations of a private financial world.

His works are presented alongside banknotes created by Brazilian artist Raimundo Camilo during his time in a psychiatric hospital, painted wooden coins by American preacher and visionary artist Howard Finster, and handmade currencies by an anonymous artist whose sense of authority is drawn from memory, belief and personal compulsion.

At a time when physical money is increasingly being replaced by contactless payments, banking apps, digital markets and cryptocurrencies, CURRENCY EXCHANGE asks what may be lost as currency becomes less tangible. Through these deeply personal objects, the exhibition reflects on trust, authorship and the enduring human desire to give value a visible form.
