Churchill on Film – The Wallace Collection
This October, The Wallace Collection welcomes acclaimed film and television director Thaddeus O’Sullivan for a special evening exploring the many portrayals of Winston Churchill on screen.
O’Sullivan will be joined by Dr Lucy Davis, Curator of Paintings at The Wallace Collection and co-curator of Winston Churchill: The Painter, for a conversation examining Churchill’s public and private character, as well as the challenges of depicting such a well-known historical figure on film.
The discussion will centre on O’Sullivan’s 2009 drama Into the Storm, which starred Brendan Gleeson in an Emmy Award-winning performance as Churchill. Set towards the end of the Second World War, the film explores Churchill’s life as a wartime leader and politician while also touching on his lesser-known passion for painting.
Drawing connections between the film and the museum’s current exhibition, Winston Churchill: The Painter, the evening offers a closer look at how different sides of Churchill’s life have been interpreted through both cinema and art.
Guests attending in person can stay for drinks and enjoy after-hours access to the exhibitions until 8.45pm. The talk will also be streamed live via Zoom, with online ticket holders receiving access to a recording for two weeks afterwards.
