About
On Friday 12 September 2025, the celebrated French soprano Véronique Gens joins acclaimed pianist James Baillieu at Wigmore Hall for an evening that drifts effortlessly from the lyrical elegance of the Belle Époque to the smoky charm of transatlantic musical theatre.
The programme opens with the refined romanticism of Gounod and Hahn, moving through the rich tonal landscapes of Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Debussy, works steeped in poetry, intimacy, and exquisite melodic craft. From the delicate nostalgia of Duparc to the folk-inspired lyricism of Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne, each piece offers a fresh hue in this finely shaded recital.
The second half takes a surprising and delightful turn, with nods to chanson and Broadway. Expect the wistful glamour of La Vie en rose, the heartfelt sweep of Hymne à l’amour, and the sophisticated wit of Kurt Weill and Jerome Kern, culminating in timeless standards such as All the Things You Are and Till There Was You.
With Gens’ radiant phrasing and Baillieu’s masterful accompaniment, this performance promises to conjure both the intimacy of Parisian salons and the sparkle of a New York stage.
