Sofia Mitsola: In Conversation – The Hellenic Centre
The Hellenic Centre welcomes London-based artist Sofia Mitsola for a conversation with Alyce Mahon, Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Cambridge, exploring Mitsola’s distinctive artistic practice.
Marking the launch of the new monograph Sofia Mitsola: Sisterly Affections, the discussion continues an ongoing dialogue between the artist and Mahon, whose essay The Coquetterie of Sofia Mitsola features in the publication.
Mitsola’s paintings centre on the female form, bringing together influences ranging from ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology to Vladimir Nabokov and Gustav Klimt. Her invented goddesses and mythical figures inhabit geometric settings, imagined architecture and Cycladic landscapes, allowing her to explore ideas of voyeurism, confrontation and power.
Taking place on Thursday 1 October at 7pm, the evening offers the chance to hear Mitsola and Mahon reflect on the references, themes and visual language that have shaped her work, while offering a closer look at the ideas behind Sisterly Affections.
