Seagull: True Story – Marylebone Theatre

About

Transferring to London after a highly acclaimed Off-Broadway run at La MaMa, Seagull: True Story is a bold, playful and provocative reimagining of Chekhov’s classic. Created and directed by Russian theatre-maker Alexander Molochnikov, this production blends satire, music, and raw emotion to explore art, censorship, and the search for freedom in a world where truth itself is contested.

When Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forces state censorship onto Kon’s daring interpretation of The Seagull, the play is reduced to a hollow shell of its original vision. Determined to preserve both his artistry and his livelihood, Kon escapes to New York. There, caught between his Russian heritage and the dazzling promise of America, he struggles to reinvent himself as an artist, only to discover that freedom demands far more than crossing borders.

With biting humour, inventive staging, and original music by Fedor Zhuravlev with lyrics by Noize MC, Seagull: True Story delivers what Stage and Cinema described as “Chekhov with teeth, for anyone who believes theatre should still matter.” Featuring a stellar cast including Stella Baker, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Andrey Burkovskiy, and Elan Zafir, this 2h30m production weaves love, betrayal, and the chaotic fight for meaning into a theatrical experience that is as urgent as it is entertaining.
