Painting Italy – The Wallace Collection

Explore the enduring appeal of the Italian landscape with Painting Italy, a two-part online course from The Wallace Collection inspired by Winston Churchill’s own love of painting the country.

Led by art historian Clare Ford-Wille, the course traces the ways artists have captured Italy’s lakes, mountains and dramatic vistas across the centuries, from the Abruzzi north of Rome to the Dolomites.

Beginning with Renaissance frescoes and the landscapes of Leonardo and Titian, the sessions follow the gradual rise of landscape painting as a subject in its own right, before exploring the work of visiting artists from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. The course will also consider the Macchiaioli, whose distinctive open-air painting technique used loose patches of colour, or macchia, to reimagine the Italian landscape in the later nineteenth century.

Taking place online via Zoom on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October 2026 from 6pm to 8pm, each session includes a short break and Q&A with the tutor. Recordings will also be available to ticket holders for two weeks after each session.
