NO! 1968 – 67 York Street Gallery

This November, 67 York Street Gallery presents NO! 1968, a new exhibition by artist Dameon Priestly exploring one of the most politically charged years of the 20th century.

From the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland and protests in Paris to opposition to the Vietnam War and demonstrations across the United States, 1968 became a year defined by protest, resistance and challenges to established authority.

Priestly revisits the political and visual language of the period through a series of works combining collage and paint. Images are cropped, repeated and obscured, while phrases including DEMOCRACY, LIBERTÉ, ONE MAN ONE VOTE and THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING become part of the compositions themselves.

The subject also carries a personal connection for the artist. Priestly’s grandfather took part in the People’s Democracy march in Belfast in 1968, while his parents and extended family participated in civil rights marches and protests against the Vietnam War.

Through these personal and historical references, NO! 1968 considers the distance between political ideals and lived experience, as well as the ways significant events are remembered and retold over time.
