Translated by Daniel Hahn, the darkly comic novel follows JP as he returns to his hometown in Mexico after years abroad to help care for his elderly mother. But after an encounter with a childhood acquaintance ends in a punch — and the man turns up dead the following morning — JP finds himself caught up in an increasingly chaotic mystery involving murder, drugs, fraud and the changing place he once called home.
