Ha Chong-Hyun: Exhibition – Lisson Gallery
Discover a major exhibition of Korean artist Ha Chong-Hyun at Lisson Gallery, bringing together six decades of experimentation in abstract painting.
The exhibition traces Ha’s practice from his early works of the late 1960s through to the present day, exploring his long-standing interest in surface, material and structure. Early geometric compositions and unconventional canvas works sit alongside later pieces that reflect the political and material conditions of South Korea during the 1970s.
At the heart of the exhibition is Ha’s celebrated Conjunction series, developed through his distinctive technique of pushing oil paint through the reverse of coarse hemp canvas. The process creates richly textured surfaces shaped by pressure, resistance and repetition, challenging traditional ideas of how a painting is made.
Ha Chong-Hyun runs from 24 September to 7 November at Lisson Gallery, 27 Bell Street, London. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am–6pm.
