Giorgos Ioannou – The Hellenic Centre

Marking the centenary of the birth of Giorgos Ioannou, this exhibition presents the first significant survey of the Greek artist’s work in the UK. Focusing on paintings created during the late 1960s and 1970s, it explores a defining period in Ioannou’s practice, shaped by the political tensions and censorship of the Greek military dictatorship.

Known for his distinctive use of pop art and comic-book imagery, Ioannou developed a visual language that was bold, accessible and deeply personal. His work evolved independently of American Pop Art, bringing together political trauma, autobiography, memory, nostalgia and Greek folk traditions to create an artistic vision entirely his own.

Created within a climate of political repression, these paintings use the immediacy of popular imagery to confront the social realities of their time. Many were first exhibited during the dictatorship itself, when Ioannou continued to show widely despite his opposition to the regime, including at the Greek Pavilion during the 1970 Venice Biennale. Together, the works reveal an artist committed to democracy and human rights, using colour, symbolism and familiar visual references to express political concerns with clarity and urgency.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication and a programme of special events, including a conversation exploring Ioannou’s life, work and enduring legacy.
