Christos Dikeakos: In Conversation – The Hellenic Centre

The Hellenic Centre welcomes artist Christos Dikeakos for a conversation with curator Emily Butler, tracing five decades of a practice shaped by photography, history, mythology and place.

From his Sites and Places: Athens series to later works created in Vancouver, Dikeakos has explored the layered histories embedded within landscapes and cities. His photographs consider the continual movement of cultures, the persistence of Greek mythology in contemporary life and the ways places carry traces of both ancient and more recent histories.

The conversation will also reflect on Dikeakos’ longstanding interest in collecting. His series The Collectors turns the lens towards artists, patrons, curators, writers and art lovers, examining the relationships people form with the objects and artworks that hold meaning for them. Across both expansive landscapes and more intimate scenes, his work explores the interplay between image, language, memory and place.

Born in Thessaloniki and raised in Canada, Dikeakos became a prominent figure in Vancouver’s photo-conceptual movement from the 1970s onwards. Taking place on Thursday 29 October at 7pm, the talk offers an opportunity to hear directly from the artist about the ideas and experiences that have shaped his work across more than half a century.
