Presented by Dai Ichi Arts, CHAWAN: 50 Tea Bowls by Contemporary Japanese Ceramic Makers brings together 50 works by celebrated contemporary Japanese artists, exploring the expressive possibilities of this singular form. Long associated with the Japanese tea ceremony and highly prized by the samurai class during the Edo period, the tea bowl has historically been valued not only as a functional object but also as a vessel of profound cultural and aesthetic meaning.
Through both traditional and experimental approaches, the exhibition showcases contemporary interpretations of the tea bowl, from unconventional forms and innovative glazing techniques to bold surface treatments and sculptural constructions. Expanding the traditional vocabulary of the chawan, these works invite visitors to engage with the tea bowl as an autonomous work of art while remaining connected to its rich cultural heritage.
