Beethoven and Salvatore Sciarrino – Wigmore Hall

Violinist Daniel Pioro and pianist Pat Thomas bring together two musical worlds that feel centuries apart and yet speak directly to one another.

This bold, imaginative programme places Beethoven’s fiery Violin Sonata No. 9 (the “Bridgetower Sonata”) alongside the whispering, fragile sound-world of Salvatore Sciarrino. Written in 1803 for the brilliant violinist George Bridgetower, Beethoven’s sonata was once considered so radical that even Kreutzer refused to play it. Here, it’s reimagined not as a classical monument, but as something living, searching and provocatively modern.

Sciarrino’s delicate, virtuosic 6 Capricci and the haunting miniature Per Mattia frame the evening with a sense of stillness, breath and intensity, creating a concert that feels less like a recital and more like a sonic conversation across time.
