Borrowed Light – Jaggedart Exhibition
From 10 September to 3 October 2025, the exhibition Borrowed Light brings together celebrated ceramicists Alison Gautrey, Angela Verdon, and Sasha Wardell, alongside paper artist Jorge Sarsale, in a dialogue between form, fragility, and light.
At the heart of the exhibition are three ceramic artists whose mastery of industrial techniques spans over 150 years of collective practice. Each approaches porcelain and bone china in innovative ways: Gautrey’s translucent spun porcelain vessels, Verdon’s sculptural explorations of light and shadow, and Wardell’s refined slip-cast bone china objects with subtle decorative flourishes. Their works affirm the significance of industrial pottery, now listed as Critically Endangered by Heritage Crafts, positioning these artists as custodians of a fading yet vital tradition.
In conversation with these vessels, Sarsale’s intricate paper works mirror the delicacy of porcelain. His folded, cut and shredded paper constructions, informed by his training in architecture, echo the fragility of clay and extend the exhibition’s exploration of transparency, weightlessness and presence.
Borrowed Light is further enriched by opportunities for visitors to hear directly from the artists:
Artists’ Talk: Wednesday 10 September, 2 pm (Gautrey, Verdon, Wardell)
Artists in Residence: Wednesday 17 September (Wardell, Gautrey) and Wednesday 1 October (Gautrey, Verdon), with talks at 11.30 am and 3 pm
This exhibition is not only a celebration of form, technique and friendship, but also a meditation on the enduring power of material traditions to illuminate contemporary practice.
