Agnes Lidbeck & Hanna Johansson in Conversation

About

Free

Veranda Books is set to welcome two of Sweden’s most compelling contemporary voices, Agnes Lidbeck and Hanna Johansson, for an evening of conversation on Monday 6 October 2025.

Lidbeck’s acclaimed debut novel Supporting Act appears in English for the first time, translated with sensitivity and precision by Nichola Smalley. Through the lens of her protagonist Anna, the novel traces the subtle, everyday performances of femininity, encouraging readers to reflect on the unspoken expectations society places upon women.

Johansson, recipient of the 2021 Katapultpriset Prize, presents Antiquity, translated by Kira Josefsson. Described as both daring and elegant, the novel explores desire, obsession, power and taboo, offering what has been called a “queer Lolita for the modern age”.

Together, Lidbeck and Johansson bring fresh perspectives to questions of identity, relationships and autonomy. Their discussion promises to be insightful, provocative, and deeply engaging for anyone with an interest in contemporary European literature and feminist narratives.

This is a rare opportunity to hear two boundary-pushing authors whose works have already made a significant impact in Sweden, now reaching new audiences in English.
